Smokey Eyes

Okay, confession time. Two years ago I had no idea how to do a great smokey eye. I mean, I’d seen all those tutorials in magazines and all that, but I had no idea. At this point in my life I also didn’t own any make-up brushes, and this look seemed like it needed a brush or two to make it work. To be honest, I knew very little about make-up two years ago. I couldn’t possibly attempt smokey eyes without ending up looking like a raccoon. This is how I thought I could do smokey eyes:

Today, with the help of his amazing palette from Accessorize, I’ve got this whole smokey eye thing DOWN. Well, it doesn’t look as good as this when I do it, but I’m getting there. I didn’t actually purchase the palette below – I got it for free when Clicks was running a promotion, I bought eyeliner (I always buy the Accessorize kohl eye pencil) and some nail polish, and I got the palette for free. [You can buy the palette by itself, it’s R99 at the selected Clicks stores that stock Accessorize beauty products.]

This palette is perfect for smokey eyes, I mean it was MADE for it. I’ve never used the colour on the far left though, for some reason I only use the other three and now it’s just become a habit. I’ve had this palette for over a year, I use it at least once a week and I’ve still got tons left. It’s definitely going to last me a while. At R99 I think this is a bargain!

I love smokey eyes, and my favourite inspo for them are the Olsen twins. I’ve always thought that they have the absolutely perfect ratio of messy hair and smokey eyes, that I can just NEVER get right. Help. I mean just look at this PERFECTION. [I may or may not have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to the Olsen twins. Don’t judge.]

If you’re looking for an easy-to-use, fool-proof smokey eye palette, this is the one for you. Trust me, this palette has done wonders for me and my make-up skills. Just don’t ever use the little applicator brush thing that comes with it – I learnt the hard way, it drops the eyeshadow ALL over your face and then you pretty much have to start putting on your make-up again from scratch! Here is my version of smokey eyes, definitely not as perfect as the above Olsen twin, but I tried:

Would love to hear what you think about smokey eyes. And the Olsen twins. Leave a comment or tweet us @smudgedbeauty. Even better, tweet us a photo of your favourite smokey eye, we wanna see!

Love, Olsen twins and raccoon eyes,

Jess
