Daaaarlings, of course we saved make-up for last. Thinking of our favourite make-up products of 2014 was tricky, but here they are!
I bought this mascara for myself a couple of months ago, just because I was getting a little bored with my current one, I needed to spice it up a bit. I had heard quite a few good things about this mascara (and I think I might have seen it on bakedtheblog‘s Instagram?) Anyway, I was BLOWN AWAY by this drugstore mascara, I’m definitely going to be repurchasing this when it runs out. OBSESSED with how my eyelashes look thanks to this baby.
Sorbet BB Cream
If you’ve been reading Smudged for a while you should know how I feel about BB cream, and this Sorbet one in general. Hands down my favourite make-up product of 2014. Seriously. I’ve found that teaming this BB cream up with a good primer means even better coverage and staying power – with my skin I never need foundation again!
MAC Brow Gel – Empathetically Blonde
MAC were killing the brow department last year with the release of their waterproof brow set range. The South African market had yet to release any drugstore tinted brow gels, not sure if there are any today even, and we certainly don’t have any easy access to Benefit Gimme Brows or the famous Eyeko brow gels so I was totally over the moon when MAC announced this range. This colour is perfect for blondes. Read my ode to it over here. I can’t wait to purchase more from this range because I am a brow nut.
Rimmel Extra Super Lash waterproof Mascara
I’d never used a waterproof mascara before, I’ve always struggled to completely remove mascara residue so the idea of rubbing the shit out of my eyes for longer was very unappealing to me. However, I’d curl my lashes and be super disappointed at how much they would drop after using a non-waterproof mascara. It looked like I hadn’t curled them at all so I aways used to think what the point was then of doing it. Try a waterproof mascara to hold a curl they say, so I decided to try out a chepo one and came across this Rimmel Extra Super Lash waterproof Mascara because I liked the wand and it was under R100. It is amazing guys, doesn’t flake, easy to remove, builds volume without clumping, lengthens and best of all, hold a curl all freaking day long. Think Amy Adams Big Eyes.
MAC Charcoal Brown Eye Shadow
Don’t go by the colour on this image but this is the perfect brow colour for my cool toned brows. What I love about this product the most it that I would burn through my brow pencil, MAC Fling, but I use this ever day of my life and I have used about 0.05% of the product. I apply to the tails of my brows pretty much exclusively and anything left over on my brush gets used on front ends. I just thought this should get a mention since it has resolved the “but how am I going to afford filling in my brows everyday” question. And I would rather go without foundation than without brows.
Jodi (too many favourites to handle)
This made it in the final stretch of the year. I’d tried it several times since it’s launch in the year but every branch of MAC I’d been to didn’t have my colour in. It was heartbreaking but I knew it would be mine. With luck on my side I finally got it at the V&A branch and it’s changed my brow game ten fold. Today I even managed instagrammable ombre brows that are completely waterproof. Need I say more.
I’ve always been a fan of the vamp and red lips but I’d never owned a lip liner before and was perfectly happy with my free hand application. This year I picked up 3 and they all are game changers. It’s quite hard to see good pictures of the colour but if you like give us a shout and I’m happy to do swatches on my lips over on our Instagram.
First is MAC lipliner in Spice the actual colour a little lady named Kylie Jenner made famous with her overdrawn faux-naturale lips.
I discovered L.A Girls lip/eye liners in the second half of last year and this one was a whopping R20. The colour I have and love is P555 ROSE and I must say that I feel like Nicki Minaj whenever I wear it and that’s really a good feeling to have. I have my eye on their grey and navy next.
Then because it’s impossible for me not to fall in love with the darkest shade I can find I also got and am besotted with is MAC lipliner in Nightmoth. Both Beth and I have a common love for this beaut.
Yardley Kajal Pencil in Black
I never thought I’d every say a good thing about a black eyeliner pencil but the Yardley Kajal Pencil in Black has been a huge eye opener (haha!) I can tightline my eyes now with no transfer now. Yardley has really shone out to me this year in terms of their make up offerings.
Honourable Mentions: Eyeshadow (in general) and Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation
Mich (also too many favourites!)
MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set in Red Chestnut
This is my favourite product of the year and a total game-changer for me. I don’t have any pigment naturally in my brows and depend on regular appointments getting them tinted to keep me looking human. This gel colours my brows, fills in all the gaps and stays put until I wash it off with an oil cleanser at night. Easily my holy grail product of the year!
Bobbi Brown Long-wear Even Finish Foundation
I just started using this a month ago but I already love it. It’s a long-wearing foundation which means it stays put. It also comes in a wide range of colours which is AMAZING and far too rare for foundation brands! My favourite part is how easy it is to blend, this really is fool-proof to apply. I personally use a buffing brush but it would work with pretty much any technique or tools. I also really love the natural looking coverage, not too heavy and not too light.
MAC Paint in Untitled
I absolutely love MAC Paints! I think they’re completely underrated as I never see them featured anywhere, and they definitely deserve more praise. This colour is a perfect nude for pale girls, and I use it as an eye primer every morning. It stays put all day and helps keep any eyeshadow layered on top of it from fading. If you struggle with creasing or fading eyeshadow, definitely give these a try.
Inglot Freedom System Fusion Blush and Illuminator in 204
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Lightscapade
I get lots of compliments on this one, with people mistaking it for my natural healthy glow (as if). It’s such a beautiful mix of colours and creates a stunning moonlit, ethereal highlight. I absolutely adore it, and it lasts forever.
Stila Stay All Day Lipsticks in Fiery and Dolce
Ah man I love lipsticks. So so much. Beth is a long-time Stila Stay All Day devotee and I’m now a convert. These stay on until you take them off and don’t fade at all. Fiery is an amazing blue red, and Dolce the perfect rusty nude for my colouring. LOVE.
Tell us your 2014 favourites, we’d love to hear them!
