40 Questions Beauty Tag: Beth

Hi Errrrabodyyyyyyyy, There’s a beauty tag that’s been doing the rounds and we decided to join in on the fun. If you feel like getting to know my beauty habits a little bit better take a look at the 40 questions below…

1) How many times do you wash your face daily?

Only once, at night, unless I’m applying fresh make-up, which I do not wear daily. I don’t have oily skin so I don’t feel the need to cleanse my face more than once a day. I’m a firm believer in keeping some natural oil on your face!

2) What skin type do you have?

Dry/normal skin. I recently took roaccutane and am blissfully blemish free, but I am more on the dehydrated spectrum of skin.

3) What is your current facial wash?

I’m currently using the REN rosa centifolia cleansing balm. I prefer milk or oil cleansers as they tend to not dry my skin out as much as a foam or gel facial wash.

4) Do you exfoliate?

Not as much since I have taken roaccutane, but on the occasion that I do I use enzyme exfoliators as apposed to a physical or manual exfoliator which uses beads or other non-chemical agents to remove dead skin. BHAs are good for oily skin and AHAs are best for dry.

5) What brand do you use?

I like the Sorbet skin polish powder and the Environ alpha hydroxy gel.

6) What moisturizer do you use?

I have been using the Environ original range for a few years now and currently have their Ultra Night Moisturiser which has the highest amount of retinol in it. I like environ because my skin responds really well to their products but also because their prices are fair. Good quality skincare doesn’t need to be ridiculously overpriced.

7) Do you have freckles?

Yes, a lot. When I was a kid I spent all day long swimming in the pool so I was out in the sun everyday. Combined with being fair it was just inevitable. I was the freckled kid growing up.

8) Do you use eye cream?

No. I have the opinion that the skin around your eyes is exactly the same as the skin on the rest of your face. I wont buy into the marketing ploy of buying grotesquely overpriced creams for an area that just needs a little more hydration than the rest of the face. I would rather purchase an oil or super hydrating face cream and slap some on in that area then buy an eye-cream. But that is just my humble opinion :p.

9) Do you or did you have acne prone skin?

Yip, since going off the pill, which I orginally went on for my bad skin, my chest and back area flared up quite badly at 25. My dermo suggested roaccatane and I have been pimple free ever since. Modern medicine is a miracle creator.

10) Cleansing Tip?

Oil removes oil. If you are wanting to remove oil from your face, an oil-based cleanser or oil balm will do a much better job than a water or soap-based cleanser. It’s science yo, water and oil don’t mix so this a more gentle way of cleansing the skin.

11) What foundation do you use?

Yves Rocher Serum Foundation, MAC Studio Sculpt, Garnier BB Cream (my fav although not strictly a foundation).

12) How about concealer?

MAC mineralize concealer, LA girl pro conceal. And sometimes, I just can’t stop them from creasing :(

13) Do you know your undertone colour?

Hmmmm I would say cool but my freckles make my face skin seem slightly warm sometimes. I have quite a red complexion so I would say cool but without the red my undertone is on the yellow side. It’s a conundrum, either way I think foundation with a yellow/warm base suits everyone so no matter the undertone, don’t pick a pink-based foundation.

14) What do you think of fake eyelashes?

Hell to the yes. I looooove individual lashes and cutting off the ends of old pairs to wear just as corner ones.

15) Did you know that you are supposed to change your mascara every 3 months?

Yes – and I never do and my eyeballs are still in my head :p Plus I prefer them when they have dried out a bit. Less clumpage.

16) What brand of mascara do you use?

My holy grail mascara at the moment the Rimmel Waterproof Extra Super Lash. Buying a waterproof mascara has changed the game for me because of how the curl in my lashes holds up. I also think Clinique makes fantastic mascaras if you’re willing to invest.

17) Make Up Item that you can’t seem to get enough of?

Highlighters!!! I like them baked for extra dimension, loose as an intense dusting, liquid so I can mix it with my foundation or in my bronzers so people can see my face from out of space. Anything sparkling captivates and holds my attention, I’m like a magpie for things to make my face sparkle.

18) Do you have a MAC Pro-card?

Nope and I really really want one though!

19) What makeup tools do you use in makeup application?

I usually use my Real Techniques buffing brush for light/medium foundation, my RT complextion sponge for full coverage foundation and my RT expert face brush for BB cream. I never use my hands because I would at some point wipe some base on my outfit.

20) What are your favourite brushes?

MAC – 217, 224 Real Techniques – Buffing Brush, Blush Brush, Contour Brush, Detailer Brush, Setting Brush, Expert Face Brush Eco Tools – Tapered Blush Brush, Blending Brush, Angled Brush

21) Do you use primer for the eyes?

I don’t have oily eyelids so my make-up tends to stay put, but I do have a travel size of the Urban Decay primer potions and they are cute and sweet but totally unnecessary. I’m not even certain primer for the face is need, just throughly moisturised skin.

22) What is your favourite eye shadow shade?

Urban Decay YDK. And MAC Embark.

23) Do you use pencil or liquid eyeliner?

Liquid for sure. I tightline and have no clue how people do it with khol let alone a pencil. Plus I think a liquid is more opaque.

24) What do you think of pigment eyeshadows?

Love them. I wish all my shadows were pigments. Glitters are the way of the future, magpie syndrome strikes again.

25) Do you use mineral makeup?

No. Me thinks it’s a scam.

26) What is your favourite lipstick?

Stila stay all day liquid lipstick in Fiery. Or MAC honeylove for a nude.

27) How about lipgloss?

Meh. If I must… as you can tell from the previous question I like matte lip products. Long hair, lipglosses and Cape Town winds are never going to get along.

28) What is your favourite blush to use?

You know what, I don’t really dig blush all that much. I prefer to use a bronzer on my cheeks. My sister gave me Nars Orgasm for my birthday and it is baie mooi, but that’s about all the blush I own. Would like to get a contoury/peachy blush one day though.

29) Where do you buy your make-up online?

I have purchased from Rubybox and Retailbox before. Buying make-up online can be great for getting discounts.

30) Do you like drugstore makeup?

Yes, of course! It rivals some high end brands and I think make-up is sadly very over priced for what you pay for and luxury make-up is, well, for the luxurious.

31) Your favourite in SA?

Catrice. Then NYX.

32) Did you ever consider taking make-up classes?

I’d loooooove to take an advanced class.

33) Are you clumsy in putting on makeup?

Ermmmm not so much on me, on other people yes.

34) Name a makeup crime that you hate?

I don’t really hate anything tbh, nothing somebody does to their own self really gets my blood boiling. I do hate being told by the opposite sex (and same sex) what I should and should not put on my face. Aesthetically, I guess I think brows that are too dark don’t do anyone a good service?

33) Worst general-beauty crime?

I would have to say high contrast two-toned hair, orangey foundation, gunmetal eyeshadow with red lipstick. But hey, some people dig all that :)

34) Do you like colourful shades of makeup (lipstick, eyeshadow) or neutral ones?

I lust over a bold lip colour, but only with a neutral eyeshadow. I prefer to wear neutral on top and bold on the bottom. Neutral is sexy and a pop of colour is beautiful. Guess it just depends on what mood takes me, but I lean more towards neutral.

35) Which celebrity always has great make up?

I guess she’s a celebrity of sorts, but Samantha Chapman from Pixiwoo has me salivating over her looks, and she is a make-up artist so her skills are always on fleek. Don’t hate me, but Kim Kardashian’s make-up artists’ sculpt out everything perfectly, I’ll give credit to them and not her.

36) If you could leave the house using just ONE make up item, what would you use?

My brow pencil because I have short brows.

37) Could you ever leave the house without any makeup on?

I do it about 90% of the time. I implore all of you to not “rely” on make-up. Yes, I aesthetically like how I look with make-up on, but I also like how I look without and I by no means feel the need to wear it. I also would like to feel free with my appearance as much as men do, but I like art and so I naturally cannot help enjoying painting my face too.

38) Do you think you look good even without any makeup on?

Bloody hell, if I didn’t I would be a sad sad human being indeed.

39) In your opinion, what is the BEST makeup line?

Hmmmm in terms of quality I would say Nars, however, if I had to rate a brand based on range, quality and selection of products I would have to say MAC. They really have some knock-out products and a huge selection of good quality shiz.

40) What do you think of make up in general?

I think it’s fun. You can wash it off, none of it is permanent. It is a form of self expression, like clothing. I think it does the same thing to women and men that war paint did for our ancestors. I don’t think it will cure cancer and I don’t think it should be used to mask insecurities. It is used for so many theatrical ways of expression that it can’t just be labelled as superficial. Would you be as mesmerized by a geisha if she did not have her make-up on? We modify our bodies in so many other ways, make-up is just one other way. As with many things in life, don’t rely on it to make you happy. And if you can’t cover it up, throw some glitter on it. We’re all born naked, the rest is drag!

Thanks for reading peeps, we’ll be posting more from the Smudged girls next week so watch out for the post if you enjoyed getting to know our thoughts on beauty!
