40 Questions Beauty Tag: Jess

Heyyyy guys.

I saw this post on Kiss, Blush & Tell a couple of weeks ago and I thought it would be awesome for us Smudged girls to answer all of them (including the ones that Tori changed to make it better for us here in SA) to give you a bit more insight into each of us and the make-up we love because (trust me) we’re all very different. (also – I got snapchat so if you wanna keep up with all the shizz I do during the week add me: jessigamble or leave me a comment with your name so I can add you!)

1) How many times do you wash your face daily?

I would be totally lying if I told you that I washed my face twice every day. I know it’s terrible and I know my skin would be better if I did, but I just don’t always remember. I end up washing it every morning and then in the evening I may give it a gentle scrub in the shower (I have cleverly left my face scrub there to remind myself) or I may just use some of the gentle Aloe toner from Clicks that I love to get rid of some make-up (maybe even a face wipe or two too)

2) What skin type do you have?

I guess it’s kinda dry, but not tooo dry. I’ve tried out some products that we’ve been sent which are specially for very dry skin and I end up too oily. So my final answer here is normal to dry.

3) What is your current facial wash?

I’m currently using Clinique’s Foaming Facial Soap (mild), it’s almost  finished and I’m forcing myself to finish it off because I start anything new.

4) Do you exfoliate?

Sure do! My skin loves a good exfoliation!

5) What brand do you use?

I’m currently enjoying the Good Things Manuka Honey Refining Face Scrub – it’s got a great oatmeal vibe to it, I also love that this brand is free from parabens, mineral oils and sulphates.

6) What moisturizer do you use?

*quickly scrolls down to see how many questions there still are on skincare*
At the moment I’m using REN Ultra Moisture Day Cream which I’m really enjoying.
7) Do you have freckles?
Yes. Although they’re light enough that they’re easily covered up and people don’t notice them. Actually wish they were a little darker.
8) Do you use eye cream?
On occasion. I try to use it every Sunday night when I’m having a little pamper sesh. If I’m feeling particularly old/tired I’ll also slap some on.
9) Do you or did you have acne prone skin?
Not really, the occasional spot every now and again but nothing too hectic.
10) Cleansing Tip?
Haha, I probably shouldn’t be giving out any cleansing tips but maybe I can give some that I also need to stick to?
1. Wash your face every day twice a day (I’m trying)
2. Always remove all make-up (I’m trying
3. Keep drinking loads of water, I’ve noticed the difference in my skin
11) What foundation do you use?
Don’t judge, but I pretty much never wear proper foundation, I’m more into BB Cream and at the moment my favourite is Sorbet’s one – so good.
12) How about concealer?
Again, I don’t really use concealer. If I have a spot or something that I need to cover up I might slap some Essence Concealer on it, but I don’t see the point of a hectic concealer with BB Cream because I’m trying to look nice and natural (but that being said I know I need to put on my big girls pants and go and buy a proper concealer – I think I’m going to try the L.A Girl PRO Concealer after reading Kiss, Blush & Tell’s answers!)
13) Do you know your undertone colour?
RED. sad face. At the moment I’ve been using Catrice’s Prime & Fine Anti-red base which is definitely helping.
14) What do you think of fake eyelashes?
Obsessed, but I just can’t figure out how to apply them properly so can only actually wear them when Beth is around to apply them for me! My favourites were these silver sparkly ones I got from a Chinese store for like R10 – perfect for dress up parties.
15) Did you know that you are supposed to change your mascara every 3 months?
Ah, yeah I remember reading that somewhere but I definitely think 3 months is too soon! I usually change mine after a bit longer than that when it’s dry and gross and pretty much finished.15) What brand of mascara do you use?
I use Maybelline most days – love their Falsies Volum Express! I also use Bare Minerals when I’m feeling a bit more fancy (mostly because I don’t want to use it up too quickly because we can’t get this brand in SA sad face.)
16) Make Up Item that you can’t seem to get enough of?
I love a good highlighter – Feeling Younger from LUSH is one of my favourites. And of course I’m pretty much obsessed with BB cream as I’m sure anyone who reads this blog a lot will know.
17) Do you have a MAC Pro-card?
Nope. What is this and how do I get one?
18) What makeup tools do you use in makeup application?
Mostly my fingers, but sometimes brushes. I got hooked on my foundation brush from rubybox beauty, but I do mostly find it easier to use my fingers. Next on my list is a beauty blender!19) What are your favourite brushes?
My foundation brush from rubybox (as I mentioned above prematurely), and a brush set I brough from Boots a year or so ago.
20) Do you use primer for the eyes?
I can safely say nope. Although I’ve heard great things about The Body Shop’s Instablur for eyes. Might give that a try.
21) For the face?
It seems I really am answering these questions a bit prematurely. Yeah, as I mentioned above Catrice’s Prime & Fine Anti Red Base and sometimes Yardley London’s Illuminating Primer. I normally wear the Anti Red Base most days and the Illuminating Primer if I’m going out at night.

22) What is your favourite eye shadow shade?

Ok, I just don’t have a favourite. When I do put some eye shadow on (which is not very often) I tend to use this palette from Accessorize.

23) Do you use pencil or liquid eyeliner?

I use them both, but differently. Liquid liner for when I’m going out and want an intense look. But pencil for a softer smokey look, especially on the lower lash line.
24) What do you think of pigment eyeshadows?
It gets everywhere!!! They’re great but I just seem to get the stuff all over me.
25) Do you use mineral makeup?
I seem to have a bit of it (from Bare Minerals) but I’m not convinced that it’s THAT much better. I guess I’m undecided.
26) What is your favourite lipstick?
Ummmm.  I love a good Mac Red. It’s classic and it just works. I’m currently looking for the perfect dark plum shade for winter – I’ll keep you posted.
27) How about lipgloss?
I’m really not a fan to be honest. Your hair sticks to it, and it goes everywhere. But maybe I’m just a bit more messy than everyone else. I never want my make-up to stop me from doing something.
28) What is your favourite blush to use?
I don’t really do blush. I’ve got enough red in my skin.
29) Where do you buy your make-up online?
I’m not really that keen on buying make-up online. How do you feel it/test it etc? If I know exactly what I’m buying and I’ve had it before then I’d be ok with buying online.
30) Do you like drugstore makeup?
Hell yeah! My favourites!

31) Your favourite in SA?

My favourite at the moment is Catrice and Revlon (love Revlon nail polish at the moment!)

32)Did you ever consider taking make-up classes?
I would love to do make-up classes, but I just need to find some time and some funding.
33) Are you clumsy in putting on makeup?
Probably. I just like to use my fingers and stuff, you know. I’m not at all precise, but I think that’s what makes it look real.

34) Name a makeup crime that you hate?

I HATE it when people put own hectic orange foundation and it gets in their eyebrows! It’s the worst. All you can see is little orange hairs and the foundation is like caked on!

35) Worst general-beauty crime?

I can’t really speak here because it’s probably something I do like not taking make-up off before I go to sleep or something. I’ll just sit this one out

36) Do you like colourful shades of makeup (lipstick, eyeshadow) or neutral ones?

Bit of both actually. I generally like to have neutral shades and then one pop colour. For example, subtle eyes and then dark red lips. Or dark eyes and very subtle lips.

37) Which celebrity always has great make up?
Kendall Jenner always looks amazing, um, thats all I can think of for now.
38) If you could leave the house using just ONE make up item, what would you use?
Ah shit, um, probably mascara. (But I wish it was two items because then it would be my brow kit too!)
39) Could you ever leave the house without any makeup on?
Yes, and I do often.
40) Do you think you look good even without any makeup on?
I just gotta mention what Beth said as an answer to this question – PREACH  it sister. I mean, of course make-up makes everything looks better but I think I look fine without it too. I mean, my boyfriend doesn’t scream in horror when he wakes up next to me in the morning, that must be a good sign?
41) In your opinion, what is the BEST makeup line?
Oh fuck, I don’t know. From personal experience probably MAC, but I don’t have THAT much experience so I don’t think my opinion is too valuable, soz.
42) What do you think of make up in general?
I love it, and I love layering it on for a good night out, but I’m not the kinda person that can put in a lot of effort for make-up everyday. My current daily make-up routine for work takes me 5 minutes and thats perfect for me. But on a night out I’m going to spend more than that. It just depends.
Sho, so that was actually 42 questions. Hope you had a good read (if you made it this far) and happy Friday!
Love, gin and red lipstick.
